Lessons from Ramadan - Caring for Others 

 

During the holy month of Ramadan, many Muslims around the world observe fasting for 30 days from sunrise to sunset. The purpose of this, however, is not simply to avoid eating or drinking but to strengthen one’s willpower and sympathize with the less fortunate. As sunset approaches, many families, friends, and communities get together to break their fasts, pray and appreciate each other’s company.  

The month of Ramadan emphasizes many teachings. One important lesson is learning to be kind and caring towards others. Many individuals do volunteer work or offer community service during this period.  Caring for someone other than yourself brings a sense of inner peace that Ramadan practices try to encourage.  

There is a common saying, “Be kind to your neighbors” and if you think about it, the ripple effect of this advice could spread across the globe. It doesn’t have to be a glamourous show of care either, sometimes simple things can go a long way. Wish them a ‘good morning’ with a smile, invite them to share in your celebrations, or offer help whenever you can. These small acts of kindness can often lead to a sense of community.  

Ramadan encourages developing care amongst the people around you and reflecting on all the blessings in your life. We often lose focus of what’s important in our day-to-day busy lives, but sometimes taking a moment to sit down, reflect and have a meal with those you love can help you realize what’s important.  

Even if you don’t observe fasting during Ramadan, adopting these simple habits can help you join in on the Ramadan spirit.
