A Look into Eid Celebrations in Different Countries

One of the most important days in the year for Muslims is Eid Al Fitr. It is celebrated on the first day after the holy month of Ramadan and can last up to three days. A universal tradition is sacrificing a sheep on the first day of Eid, and many families feed their neighbors and donate the meat to charity. Another universal tradition is visiting your grandparents and relatives and giving children money and treats.

There are many traditions that are observed during Eid amongst all Muslims, however there are traditions that only pertain to certain countries. In Turkey, Eid is celebrated with a trip to the beach with your family for some fishing, swimming, barbeques, etc. In Singapore, lights fill the sky in the Geylang Serai area as they celebrate with a festival. This festival has many different types of food, music, shows, and much more for families to enjoy. In Indonesia people bake a traditional thousand-layer cake called Lapis Legit. In Malaysia people often go back to their hometowns a day early to decorate their homes with oil lamps. Traditions are an important part of every culture, so make sure you participate in them as much as possible!
